Windows 12 Release Date Announced: What to Expect

Official Release Date for Windows 12 Revealed

The Future is Near: Microsoft has finally announced the release date for Windows 12, setting the tech world abuzz.

Windows 12, anticipated for a 2024 debut, is likely to emerge in the latter half of the year, with September being a probable launch window. This timing is in line with previous significant updates for Windows 11. The upcoming version is expected to maintain the annual update pattern observed in recent years, despite earlier speculation about a shift to a three-year development cycle.

However, the situation remains somewhat unclear due to changes in the core Windows architecture. Codenamed Hudson Valley, Windows 12 is set to be built on a fresh platform release known as Germanium, marking the first substantial upgrade to the Windows platform since the introduction of Windows 11. The development team has scheduled the completion of Germanium by April, and devices will start featuring its new features from June. However, Microsoft plans to roll out the majority of Windows 12’s functionalities in September.

The emphasis on Germanium is primarily due to its significant enhancements for Arm-based devices, notably those running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite. Given the substantial progress these devices represent for both Qualcomm and Windows, Microsoft is keen to launch them at the earliest, albeit initially without the full range of new features. Microsoft expects to release the complete Hudson Valley update later in the year for these devices, along with other existing devices.
